California AB1955 Update

San Diego Unified Needs to Build Trust with Parents and Focus on Academics

Jul 22, 2024

Update on California AB1955

In May, I shared that AB 1955 was moving through the CA legislature. Sadly, on July 15, Governor Newsom approved this troubling legislation that diminishes the authority and influence of local school boards and parental involvement. This bill is unprecedented in that it eliminates the local school board authority and prevents parents from being involved in their children's wellbeing. By stripping local school boards of their power, the bill not only disregards the unique needs of individual communities but also erodes the foundational principles of localized education.

Will This Change San Diego Unified?

Unfortunately, SDUSD has been removing parental rights over the past several years. SDUSD policy offers students the opportunity to change their name or gender without notifying parents. Without a transparent school to home partnership built on trust, students aren't set up for success.
